Pottery making as a tradition began in the Southwest sometime
near 750AD and has been a continuous tradition till present
day. In the historic period there are sixteen pueblos that
produced unique pottery styles here in New Mexico and Arizona.
All of the historic pottery is made using the coil technique,
painted with mineral or vegetal paint, and traditionally fired
outdoors in cedar and sheep dung. Some of the most famous
Native American artists are potters including Maria Martinez,
Tony Da, Margaret Tafoya and Nampeyo.
